North Fork Flyfishing Tips and Tactics
by Rory Bridges

I got into flyfishing only five years ago, and began seriously fishing the North Fork around that same time.  I'm sure most would consider me inexperienced, but the knowledge I've gained and time on the water in these past five years are things to consider.  I had the privilege to work on the North Fork for a  summer and was able to fish nearly every day of the week.  It was a summer I will never forget and the experience gained cannot be replaced.

Flies and Tactics

My overall favorite fly for the North Fork would be, a #8 Black Kauffman Stonefly. I would say that this fly has produced the most numbers and big fish overall. I nymph fish probably 75% of the time and strip wooly's during the remainder. I am convinced that the fish on this river are to some degree fat and lazy. They are blessed with an abundance of aquatic foods that can be found a majority of the time right on the bottom of the river.  This is why I prefer to fish heavy flies that increase my odds of getting the fly in the feeding zone and ultimately catching more fish. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy tying on a #14 caddis when some surface activity can be noted or fishing hoppers during late Summer. Being able to see a fish come out of the depths to take your fly on the surface can't be matched, but I've had most of my luck with fishing heavy flies on the the bottom.

Where and Why
For this fact, I spend most of my time in the riffles. I enjoy fishing them for two main reasons. The fish have a feeling of security, because their predator's are unable to spot them as well in the broken water. Also they are positioned in the faster water because they want to eat and they don't have to expel a lot energy searching for aquatic foods, especially in the North Fork. Both of these factors have proven to increase my odds and have produced more fish than any other fishing situation.
