I finally landed him in front of the group. This was the
first time these guys had been on the North Fork River or saw a trout that big.
Needless to say, the river did not let them down. I was just hoping that the
river could produce this type of fishing for the next 2 days.
The next morning a group of us canoed from Kelly Ford to Patrick Bridge.
The weather was wonderful. It was about 60-65 degrees. We caught many fish
that day, doing well in the riffles. Hot flies were the woolly bugger and beadhead prince
nymph [bigger the better (10-12)]. The key to catching the fish that day was
weight (#6 shot 4-5 at a time) and dead drifting the fly. If you think you
have enough weight, add some more. If you don’t hang up then your not weighted
enough. I would fish through the riffle and on the swing would strip the
fly 3"-6" erratically. They usually hit the fly on the swing. Rainbow
Alley was wonderful, everybody caught fish in that area. Fishing was so
good in that area, it is where we went the next day.
That evening I was fishing the same beadhead woolly bugger when I hooked a
large rainbow. He jumped completely out of the water right in front of me.
He was at least 19-21". It was a fitting way to finish a long beautiful day
of fishing. After that nothing could top how this perfect weekend ended.
The trip went very well. Everybody caught fish and of course Myron’s
hospitality is second to none. We are already planning another trip.
