January 15, 16, and 17 2000. The water was low and very
clear. The fish were going to be ''apparently'' hard to fool.
But in my opinion I found it to be very different .....
Saturday morning I caught two small rainbows in the riffles below
the River of Life Spring. The fishing was slow that day. While I hooked several more fish,
I eventually lost them.
Sunday morning I caught a small rainbow that I
swear was a ''cutbow.'' Fishing later that morning, I caught a stout 15'' brown in same
riffle. (Note: when I was holding the brown in the water it spit out a sculpin!!!)
Around three or so I floated from Kelly Ford to the River
of life. "Right of the bat" I caught a NICE 17'' brown that took a run 40-50
foot downstream. He fought like a salmon.
From there down I caught a
rainbow in every riffle [10-13''] . Most of the trout were caught on a rubber leg
stonefly, although one bow was caught on a size 12 olive scud. While fishing the last
riffle before the Falls, I looked down and saw 26'' brown at my feet!!!!!! (well at least
23''). It was dark and I lost sight of him pretty quick.
Monday morning
I caught 2 - 15'' browns in riffle below the ROLF spring. Downstream I caught a small bow
with a stonefly. Then around 9:30am, I landed a 13'' bow on a Olive Murry's Strymph tied
on a black salmon hook! That bow had beautiful colors! During the weekend I had one Brown below the ROLF Spring make a run so fast my
reel was spinning backwards!!!! I had another nice one between Kelly Ford and the ROLF
that broke my line. All weekend the best fly was the Rubberleg Stone Fly.
The weekend was mostly filled with bows consisting of
10-14''. The trip was great and it was the best fishing adventure I've ever
experienced!!!!
Thank you ROLF.
