North Fork River Flyfishing Report

"On our recent visit to the River of Life Farm my buddies and I were fortunate to have perfect weather and sky conditions. The daily overcast produced some of the best hatches I've seen in the last few years.

While the North Fork was lower than it usually is for April the fishing was good. Our best efforts were in working the runs with olive woollies #14-12 and squirrel's hair nymphs #16. Yellow crackle-backs were a hit when fished in the surface film and pulled under at the end of the drift. Pheasant tail nymphs #16-18 were good as well.

The best fish were taken deep on full sinking line and weighted nymphs. Prince nymphs also worked at times. Pale evening dunns were popular dries during the surface action each evening while small chocolate caddis seemed to be the most abundant hatch. Caddis nymphs with a trailing husk imitation tied with grizzly tips accounted for several rainbows.

On our last evening in camp Myron invited us to fish 'The Falls'. Easily the most beautiful place on the North Fork, the falls ended up being Myron's front yard!

Taking his advice on approaching the run from the far side we made our way across the river and entered just below the white water. The evening light made it difficult to see my selection of a pale evening dunn dry #18 so I made a roll cast and skittered the dry out of the direct current into a seam. As usual, I was fiddling with my line instead of being ready on the first cast and a large trout rolled on my offering.

Making a quick false cast I dropped the dry slightly upriver of the roll. Within the blink of an eye an explosive strike stole my fly from the surface and I was in for a power struggle. Several minutes later I had the privilege to release a gorgeous 16 inch rainbow. She was sleek and deep-bodied and colored almost too brightly to be believable!

You've got to fish Myron's front yard!!!

Having friends along that were new to the 'fork' made for some interesting discoveries about the slippery bed-rock. All managed to stay dry but not without doing our renditions of the 'North Fork river-dance' in our efforts to stay upright in the heavy current. Bring cleats!!!!

The accommodations at ROLF were first-rate. Our only regret was in leaving. Myron is a gracious host and knows the river intimately. Be sure to seek his advice on current conditions and the availability of guides and float services."
