Myron,
Thanks for helping to make my outing a nice one. I only capsized the one-person canoe once (when I was getting in the third time, just above Cave Riffle). After that, no problems.
Just when I think I have the North Fork of the
White figured out, it wallops me. I had good success above the falls in the riffle one guide called "Rainbow Alley." Swinging a #12 light Hendrickson wet fly got me three nice rainbows and one hog in about an hour.
The next morning, I tried to fish a hatch of Trico looking mayflies below the
Falls. All of my small nymphs were refused and since I didn't see any surface activity I moved on. I like to "match the hatch," so besides the trico look-alikes (size 20), others may be interested in the size 12 little yellow stones. Looks
like I missed some size 8 stones by a few weeks by the looks of the shucks I found further downstream.
I tried some big rubber leg stones in some of the deeper pools about 1/8 mile below cave riffle, and I was rewarded with a nice, hefty rainbow and a smaller bow as well. After noon, the canoes filled the water all the way down to Patrick Bridge. End of serious fishing for the day but still a nice paddle.
The last evening I fished the riffles by the campsite at dusk. I had two LDR's after nice hook ups with my Hendrickson nymph. Nothing went after the stone flies. Sorry there wasn't much surface activity but at least I didn't get skunked on my nymphs like I usually do. I'm looking forward to more and less crowded fishing this fall.
