Heavy snowfall on the
weekend of March 13 rendered the mighty North Fork very high for our crew of three fly
fishers during the following long weekend of March 18-21. In addition, steady rain on
Saturday interrupted its slow recession and even raised it a bit further for Sunday, March
21. It seemed our much awaited, annual get together was doomed to unusually high waters,
raging currents and, thus, lousy fishing.
But that's what is to be loved about the North Fork fishery. The water was high, the
wading treacherous(two of the three of us got dunked), and the currents were intense,
making getting anything down to the fish a veritable task for submarines (sinking tip,
lead core, two BB size shot and weighted flies, all at the same time-- my shoulder still
hurts).
The fishing??? For the conditions, unbelievable. The water was fairly clear, despite how
high and fast it was. As a consequence, with considerable effort, we could present large
streamer, nymph and crayfish patterns effectively all weekend (the water was highest on
Sunday and this was our slowest day). Between the three of us, four legal fish were caught
(and released), including three rainbows, one twenty inches and the other two nineteen
inches. The brown was eighteen inches. Over one dozen other
fish were caught in the three day period, most in the fourteen to sixteen inch length with
equal representation of rainbows and browns. I can't think of another MO fishery that
could be effected by so much water and still afford such good fishing. Certainly, many of
us have had days within which more fish were caught, but the size of our catch was truly
exciting. It seemed that the high water had the larger fish active and hungry.
Thanks Myron and Ann, we had a ball!!!!!!
