Date: 4-11-98
Weather: Mostly sunny, 70's, windy at times calmer in the evening
Water: Mostly clear, blue in the pools
Started around 1 PM, not much happening so tried the crackleback as I do not like having
to throw lead. Picked up a couple right out in front of the house, one of them approaching
13". Below the Falls a tree had been left by the recent high water and provided a
home for a number of 10 to 12 inchers that really liked to feed on top. I found them to be
suckers for a #18 Royal Trude and spent an hour or so until they quit rising. There were a
few caddis flying around so maybe one would hit the water once in a while and get the fish
looking up. A dead period followed until about 5:30 when the black caddis started
emerging. This got quite a few fish rising in Rainbow Alley but as usual nothing big. I
don't mind fishing for the little ones as long as they are rising and somewhat cooperative
as these were. I tried a size 20 black caddis but I could not see it very well and had
little success. Fortunately North Fork rainbows have always been willing to hit the Royal
Trude even during a hatch and this was again the case. When it got too dark to fish I quit
and so did the trout.
The next morning about 8 AM I decided to try for something bigger by going down deep with
a golden stonefly nymph. I only picked up two fish while wading the length of the farm. I
figured why waste time, so left fishing until the evening. I tried the area below the
falls to Jack's Riffle and had a bit of luck fishing to the occasional riser, one of them
a 12 inch brown. When the action came to an end, I went back up to my favorite run in
front of your house and finished the evening casting to constantly rising trout.
I would consider this a typical trip for me for this time of year.
Plenty of action, a dozen landed each day, nothing over 13 inches and all of it on top. I
probably would catch bigger fish if I used lead and strike indicator, but I certainly
would not enjoy it nearly as much.
Hope to be back down sometime in May when the sulphurs show up. Keep me informed.
